On the way to Whittier…
Montag, den 16. April 2012 um 02:22 Uhr von Sebastian BubmannNeuste Information zu Sebastian Bubmanns Ataraxia Projekt 2012!
Two great weeks at Thompson Pass come to an end! We had great weather, and only three days of flat light. Fresh powder came in at the right time and it was continuously cold, so the snow stayed in a great shape for a long time! The Thompson Pass Snow Kite Festival and Tailgate Alaska brought the craziest people together for the sickest action.
We went on a couple of trips, mostly with snowmachines or skins, took many pictures and a lot of video! The area is amazing, the scenery wonderful – even at night, when northern lights hover above the campground.
Eric, Craig, Forrest, Travis and Morgan explored a new path to the Cleave Glacier with snowmachines – we joined them another day, and rode a great line off an unknown mountain.
Now the crew will head back to Wasilla for final preparations of the biggest part of our project, the ascent of Mt. Marcus Baker with kite support.
Stay tuned for more pictures and news on our page!

Valdez – Thompson Pass
Samstag, den 7. April 2012 um 05:19 Uhr von Sebastian BubmannNeuste Information zu Sebastian Bubmanns Ataraxia Projekt 2012!
After a long drive of 330 miles through the outback of Alaska, we arrived at Thompson Pass, a couple of miles away from Valdez. So far we had some wonderful bluebird days, and now for the first time two “whiteout” days.
Snow kiting at the pass is amazing, perfect wind conditions, and we pretty much impressed the ski-touring people with the speed we can climb mountains with a kite. After two days of wind, we had a wonderful day of speedflying “Odysee”. Shortly after sunset, we took a last ride up the mountain, to do a long exposure shot with a LED Lenser headlamp, which turned out great:
We drove down to Valdez, and had a look around. Valdez is one of the biggest oil ports of Alaska – the trans-alaska-oil-pipeline ends here. The harbor is beautiful and there are no traces anymore of the Exxon Valdez tanker fatality long time ago. Although, the harbor worker Kyle said, that if you dig a little bit at the shores of Prince William Sound, you will still find oil drips.
On the second down day, we had a great party with a lot of friends of the pass, as everyone came down. The weather forecast said that it will clear up tomorrow! Ready for some more action!

First success, even without wind
Freitag, den 30. März 2012 um 19:48 Uhr von Sebastian BubmannNeuste Information zu Sebastian Bubmanns Ataraxia Projekt 2012!
The Eklutna traverse presented the ideal opportunity for the Ataraxia crew to warm up for upcoming challenges, further weld together the team, get amazing footage and have a great experience of 7 days in the Alaskan outback.
Everything went well, from the helicopter dropoff with Alpine Air Alaska to the crossing itself and the last big hurdle, belaying the crew and their sleds down the icefall at the tow of the Eklutna glacier. Only the wind did not cooperate. On top of the Whiteout glacier the crew just had enough wind to pull up one of the SPEED3 12m they brought along, but not to kite. The consequence was as easy as demanding … walking more than 50 kilometers as a roapteam. Many cereal bars and melted snow helped them to estimate the scale of the mountains and icefields in Alaska better. Everything looks like a walk in the park, until you’re there…
Apart of the wind the crew was very lucky with the Alaskan weather. Only the Whiteout glacier fully lived up to its name and forced the crew to stay at Huns’ Hut for another day. The last hurdle of the traverse was by far the most challenging. Belaying 3 heavy sleds and the crew members down the icefall of the Eklutna glacier. Crampons and ice axes helped them to get down a 10 meter wall of blue ice to a safe spot between crevasses, where the sleds could be secured and the rope set up for the last bit of glacier travel until the very end of the glacier.
Staying out there in a never ending white landscape you realize how much you depend on professional gear and equipment. Once again the Ataraxia crew would like to thank all of their sponsors for supporting the project and the amazing equipment.
Today the RV will be picked up at Great Alaskan Holidays and loaded up to the top with gear and groceries so the team can head out to Thompson Pass tomorrow. Acro paraglider Marvin Ogger will join the crew for this section of the adventure and already got in his first tumbles over the wing yesterday.
Throughout this trip the crew will have better internet access, so stay tuned for updates!

First project, the Eklutna traverse!
Dienstag, den 20. März 2012 um 11:22 Uhr von Sebastian BubmannNeuste Information zu Sebastian Bubmanns Ataraxia Projekt 2012!
In less than 7 hours the Ataraxia crew consisting of Obadiah Jenkins, Sebastian Bubmann, Philip Kuchelmeister and Nicolas Chibac will be picked up by the helicopter and dropped off on top of the Eagle Glacier to begin their 38 mile crossing of the Eklutna traverse.
The last couple of days have been a mix of mostly organizing things, prepping gear and enjoying some snow kiting, paragliding or ski touring in between. Many great things have been accomplished and new partners were acquired to support the project: Partners section.
On the third day of the journey Sebastian and Nicolas flew out to lake Illiamna to be one of the first people to ever snow kite there. It was super cold and super windy, but a great experience. Even though the major Bingo battle of the natives was a bit of a surprise … one would not really expect to run into this after an hour flight towards the end of the world.
